Network Annual Conference and Expo

Network Conference 2007

New Zealand Rural General Practice Network

Annual Conference 2007

“Growing Health at Grass Roots!”

30 March - 1 April 2007

SKYCITY Auckland

The 2007 New Zealand Rural General Practice Network (NZRGPN) conference was hailed a huge success by delegates thanks to the generous support of a wide range of presenters, trainers, sponsors and exhibitors. Accolades must also go to the voluntary input of a dedicated steering committee and other behind the scenes volunteers.

Some Highlights from the Conference:

Congratulations go to Dr Ron Janes who was awarded the inaugural Peter Snow Memorial Medal for his contribution to research in the rural health sector. Dr Janes' research showed us that providing oncall has significant negative personal consequences for GPs, nurses and their families; with serious workforce implications. The award illustrates the significance of the after-hours oncall care issue within the rural sector.

Dr Sarath Gunatunga was recognised for his contribution in rural health to his local community in Opunake, Taranaki, for over 33 years by being awarded a lifetime membership of the New Zealand Rural General Practice Network. Congratulations Sarath!

Nurse delegates used the conference as an opportunity to meet and discuss their role in rural healthcare with the Ministry of Health’s nursing director, Mark Jones, who is very keen to continue to meet with rural nurses and develop a greater understanding of them and the issues they face working in rural communities, particularly those from more remote parts of NZ where there has been a chronic GP shortage. We are hoping to attract a larger nurse representation at the Network’s next annual conference in Christchurch at the end of March 2008.

Conference evaluations have proved an important means of focus for next year's conference and we encourage you to have your say by emailing pamm@rgpn.org.nz with any further suggestions and/or feedback you may have to ensure the Network Conference continues to provide excellent opportunity for New Zealand's rural health community to network, train and discuss the issues facing New Zealand rural health practices.

Appreciation is extended to all Sponsors and Exhibitors; without whom your conference would not happen.  We hope to see them all on board again next year!
